Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.H. Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Emir of Qatar

The Secretary-General met today with H.H. Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Emir of Qatar.

The Secretary-General thanked the Emir for Qatar's role in the UN Alliance of Civilizations. They discussed the need to fight intolerance and prejudice, especially at a time of fundamental economic and political changes in the world.

The Secretary-General and the Emir discussed developments in Syria. The Secretary General stressed the urgency of a political solution to the crisis, and said it was important to continue to encourage recent efforts towards beginning political dialogue despite the difficulties. He also thanked the Emir for Qatar's humanitarian assistance.

The Secretary-General and the Emir also discussed the Middle East Peace Process. The Secretary-General underscored the need for a return to negotiations as soon as possible this year.

The Secretary-General expressed appreciation for Qatar’s hosting last year's Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention, and emphasized the role that Qatar can continue to play in fighting this threat.

The meeting was also attended by H.H. Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, who works actively with the United Nations on education.
