Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Joseph Kabila Kabange, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and H.E. Mr. Edward Ssekandi, Vice President of the Republic of Uganda

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Joseph Kabila Kabange, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and H.E. Mr. Edward Ssekandi, Vice President of the Republic of Uganda.

The Secretary-General commended the strong leadership of President Kabila and Ugandan President Museveni in addressing in a comprehensive and durable manner the recurring crisis in the region.

He also noted that their commitment is crucial in ensuring the implementation of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the region.

The Secretary-General also discussed with the leaders the role of his envisaged Special Envoy in supporting the implementation of the Framework, as well as his intention to propose to the Security Council the deployment of an Intervention Brigade within MONUSCO, the UN mission in the DRC. They discussed the importance of maintaining close collaboration with the regional organizations to ensure the success of these endeavours.
