Readout of the Secretary-General's meetings with the President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Croatia

The Secretary-General met today with the President of the Republic of Croatia, H.E. Mr. Ivo Josipovic; the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, H.E. Mr. Zoran Milanovic; and the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Croatia, H.E. Ms. Vesna Pusic.

 

During his meetings, the Secretary-General and his interlocutors discussed regional cooperation in the Western Balkans, including the President’s leadership in encouraging reconciliation and dialogue. They agreed that the European perspective of the countries of the region provided an important framework for long-term peace and stability in the region.

 

With regard to the economic situation, they exchanged views on how the impact of the economic and financial crisis in Europe could be mitigated.

 

The Secretary-General commended Croatia on its commitment and leadership in promoting LGBT rights.
 

During his meetings, the Secretary-General addressed developments in a number of countries, including the situation in Syria, as well as in Afghanistan and Croatia’s engagement with the country, especially in women’s and children’s education.

 

Also discussed was the importance of strengthening global efforts on sustainable development following the recent Rio+20 Conference.

 

The Secretary-General also salutes Croatia's leadership as Vice Chairman of the Peacebuilding Commission.
