Arms Embargo

I. Relevant Security Council resolution

The exemption from the targeted arms embargo is guided by the following:

  1. Security Council resolution 2511 (2020): paragraph 3

II. What type of targeted arms embargo exemptions are currently in force?

There is one type of targeted arms embargo exemptions:

  • For the Committee’s consideration

Exemption to the targeted arms embargo exemptions for the Committee’s consideration

Pursuant to paragraph 3 of Security Council resolution 2511 (2020), the Committee may, on a case-by-case basis, exempt any activity from the sanctions measures imposed by the Security Council in resolutions 2140 (2014) and 2216 (2015) if the Committee determines the such an exemption is necessary to facilitate the work of the United Nations and other humanitarian organizations in Yemen or for any other purpose consistent with the objectives of these resolutions.

III. How to make the request for exemptions from the arms embargo?

Please address the request for the arms embargo exemption to:

  • The Chair of the Committee, His Excellency. Mr. Joonkook Hwang (Republic of Korea), through the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations

IV. Decision-making of the Committee

The Chair of the Committee will inform in writing of the decision of the Committee regarding its consideration of exemption requests.
