Zhang Yi is a Senior Adviser responsible for issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Office of the President of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly. A position he also held in the Office of the President of the 71st Session of the UNs General Assembly.
Before joining the Office of the President of the General Assembly, Yi worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China for 16 years, covering issues related to human rights, civil society, development, the Asia–Europe Meeting (ASEM) and the Middle East. He also served for four years in the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations Office in Geneva and Other International Organizations in Switzerland, primarily dealing with the Human Rights Council. During his diplomatic career, Yi has participated in many multilateral conferences and negotiations, particularly those in the Economic and Financial Committee (Second Committee) and Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (Third Committee) of the General Assembly.
Yi speaks fluent Chinese and English, and has a Master’s Diploma in Public and International Law from Melbourne University in Australia.
