Ladies and Gentlemen,
I wish to congratulate IRENA, SEforAll, and UNFCCC secretariat for convening this critically important event here at COP25.
The global clean energy transformation is critical to climate action and to provide affordable, clean and modern energy for all.
Advancement in SDG 7 has the huge potential to spur progress across many SDGs.
Yet progress on SDG 7 is falling short.
Over 400 million people still lack access to electricity.
Around 3 billion people rely on wood, charcoal, animal and crop wastes, or other solid fuels to cook their food and heat their homes.
Significant improvements have been made in energy efficiency, but global progress is still not on target to double the global rate of energy efficiency.
Renewable energy is becoming well-established in the electricity sector, but lag behind in end uses of heating and transport.
Ladies and gentlemen,
We must accelerate the global energy transformation to achieve SDG 7 and the Paris agreement.
DESA is stepping up its efforts to support the implementation of SDG7.
First, We at DESA, as the host of UN-Energy secretariat, are committed to revitalizing this critically important coordination mechanism on energy within the UN system.
Second, DESA will strengthen support for intergovernmental dialogues on energy in the context of the High-level Political Forum and the UN Decade of Sustainable Energy for All 2014-2024.
UN DESA convenes the SDG 7 Technical Advisory Group to support these dialogues, including through annual SDG7 Policy Briefs. In this regard, we are very pleased to establish a Memorandum of Understanding with IRENA to support the work of SDG7 TAG.
The SDG7-TAG will also be instrumental in preparing for the General Assembly mandated High-Level Dialogue on energy in 2021.
Third, UN DESA and UNFCCC teamed up to organize the first global conference on synergies between the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement last April. We are delighted to announce that this will now become an annual feature, with the Second Conference to take place early next year.
We look forward to working with all partners to make SDG 7 a reality.
Thank you.
