How is climate change affecting Suryodaya?
Suryodaya Municipality is facing significant climate change impacts, erratic weather patterns, increased temperatures, and intense rainfall over short periods. These changes have severely affected agriculture, with rising pest outbreaks, declining crop yields and quality, and increased livestock diseases like lumpy skin. Water sources are drying up, leading to scarcity, while deforestation from infrastructure projects has increased landslide risks and human-wildlife conflicts. Climate change is increasingly affecting women, due to limited access to water and energy. Additionally, lightning strikes have become more frequent, causing injuries and damaging equipment.
What action are you taking to address climate change?
We have formulated the Suryodaya Climate Adaptation Plan for Action, which will guide our actions until 2030. The municipality seeks collaboration and support from neighboring rural and urban municipalities, district-level sectoral offices, the provincial and federal governments, development partners, and both international and national non-governmental organizations. It seeks to integrate disaster risk reduction measures into development projects. To ensure effective implementation, a monitoring and evaluation mechanism will be established at different levels. This approach emphasizes transparency, ownership, and accountability, with a focus on monitoring programme quality and progress, and documenting key lessons learned.
What are the benefits? Why is it important?
Through its integrated and inclusive strategy, Suryodaya aims to build a more resilient and climate-adaptive municipality. This is important because it will mitigate the risk of disasters and related loss and damage. Ultimately, it will also help make our municipality more prosperous and our people happier.
