Last week, the Integrated Training Service (ITS) of the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) finished the very first training of trainers on the new Core Pre-deployment Training Materials (CPTM) in Nairobi, Kenya. The course was held for Member State trainers in the Africa region and was attended by 23 military and police trainers from 15 African troop- and police-contributing countries (T/PCCs).

The CPTM is required in the pre-deployment training of all peacekeeping personnel – military, police and civilians. The new version of the CPTM was finalized earlier this year thanks to a grant from the Government of Denmark. It consists of 34 lessons ranging from an introduction to UN peacekeeping, to mandated tasks such as the protection of civilians, to personal conduct and health issues.

In the training of trainers, Member State trainers attended from Burundi, Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Zambia. In addition to Denmark, the course was supported by the Government of Kenya and the British Peace Support Team in Africa (BPST-A). It was held at the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC) in Nairobi, Kenya.

This training provided us with invaluable opportunities to enhance our skills and deepen our understanding of peacekeeping, a critical endeavor given the complex security challenges our global community face

Participant trainers facilitated one lesson each with support from ITS, making use of the new learning support materials through learning activities, media, slides and evaluation question banks. The course also made use of digital learning tools for quick and fun end of lesson knowledge checks. Participants of the course remarked how “user-friendly” and “well designed” the new CPTM is and how it is “helpful to trainers”.

The course was successful, efficient and especially rich in content, instructional methods and interactions between participants, instructors and staff

The course also included a two-day session on training methodology, supported by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), which covered the training cycle, lesson design, training evaluation and practical tips on how to develop lessons and deliver training in an effective way.

The next CPTM training of trainers will be aimed at troop- and police-contributing countries in Asia and held in the Republic of Korea in April.

The CPTM is available on the UN Peacekeeping Resource Hub. You can also download the specialized training materials on training methodology in English, and in French.
