Expert group meetings on violence against women (co)-convened by the DAW/DESA

Overview of expert group meetings on violence against women

The Division for the Advancement of Women has (co)-convened a number of expert group meetings on topics specifically related to violence against women.

Following the launch of the Secretary-General’s in-depth study on violence against women in October 2006, the General Assembly adopted resolution 61/143 on the intensification of efforts to eliminate violence against women. In follow-up to this resolution, the Division has convened two meetings of experts. An expert group meeting on indicators to measure violence against women was co-organized with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN ECE) and the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) in order to support the work of the Statistical Commission and the Commission on the Status of Women in developing indicators, as requested by General Assembly resolution 61/143. The Economic Commission for Africa (UN ECA), the Economic and Social Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UN ECLAC), the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP), and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN ESCWA) collaborated in the event.  The meeting was hosted by the Conference of European Statisticians’ Task Force on violence against women and held in Geneva, Switzerland from 8 to 10 October 2007. An expert group meeting on good practices in legislation on violence against women, co-organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), was held in Vienna, Austria, from 26 to 28 May 2008.

Two expert group meetings were held in preparation for the Secretary-General’s in-depth study on violence against women. The first of these, "Violence against women: a statistical overview, challenges and gaps in data collection and methodology and approaches for overcoming them", was organized in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). It was held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 11- 14 April 2005. The second expert group meeting, "Violence against women: Good practices in combating and eliminating violence against women"  , was organized in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). It was held in Vienna, Austria, from 17 to 20 May 2005.

The Division has also convened two expert group meetings on topics related to violence against women as part of preparations for relevant priority themes of the Commission on the Status of Women. The first of these, on trafficking in women and girls, was held in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, in New York, USA, from 18 to 22 November 2002. This meeting of experts took place in preparation for the forty-seventh session of the Commission on the Status of Women. The second meeting of experts, on the elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence against the girl-child, was organized in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and took place in Florence, Italy, from 25 to 28 September 2006.  This meeting of experts was held in preparation for the fifty-first session of the Commission on the Status of Women.
