This gift of a sculpture is for the International recognition of the Day of Vesak. It is also called Buddha Day and occurs on the day of the full moon in the month of May. It is a most sacred day for millions of Buddhists and some Hindus and is celebrated by followers in Asia and other parts of the world. This holy day represents the day that Buddha was born, attained enlightenment, and passed away.

The day is celebrated by bringing happiness to the unfortunate, including the sick and poor spirited. Buddhists will give gifts of assistance, including volunteering support, cash, and decorating temples. For more than two and a half millennia, Buddhism continues to highlight the spirituality of humanity. Millions have been moved by the Buddhist teachings of compassion, peace, and goodwill.  

The United Nations General Assembly, by its resolution 54/115 of 15 December 1999, recognized internationally the Day of Vesak to acknowledge the contributions of Buddhism. This day is commemorated annually at the UN Headquarters and other UN offices. 

His Holiness the 19th Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, Somdet Phra Sangharaja Chao Krommaluang Vajirañāṇasaṃvara (1913 – 2013) gave the gift to mark the General Assembly Resolution A/RES/54/115.
