Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with parliamentarian leaders from the Republic of Korea

Resúmenes | Ban Ki-moon, Former Secretary-General

The Secretary-General met today with Hon. Mr. CHUNG Sye-kyun, the Speaker of the Republic of Korea (RoK) National Assembly and the Floor Leaders of the Saenuri Party, the Minjoo Party of Korea, and the People’s Party.

The Secretary-General expressed his serious concerns regarding the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) continued nuclear and missile tests. He recognized the unprecedented simultaneous visit today by the leaders of all major RoK political parties to the United Nations Headquarters as a strong multi-partisan message against further provocation and for peace and security on the Korean Peninsula in the context of ongoing UN Security Council discussions on a new resolution on the DPRK’s fifth nuclear test.

The Secretary-General underscored the urgency for a global response to climate change and called the Paris Agreement a key milestone in this regard. The Secretary-General urged the Parliamentarians to ratify the Paris Agreement and bolster the RoK’s leadership as the host country of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the Global Climate Fund.

The Secretary-General commended the National Assembly for its many initiatives linked to the Sustainable Development Goals. He underscored the critical role parliamentarians play at the national level to ensure the implementation of the SDGs. Furthermore, the Secretary-General encouraged them to increase the RoK’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) commensurate with the country’s economic development.
