Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Nguyen Xuan PHUC, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam

The Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, on the margins of the G7 summit. The Secretary-General congratulated the Prime Minister on his recent appointment. He thanked the Prime Minister for Viet Nam’s close collaboration with the United Nations and expressed appreciation for Viet Nam’s support to UN peacekeeping operations, including its preparations to enhance contributions. The Secretary-General also expressed his concern at the current drought situation in Viet Nam.  The Secretary-General encouraged the government of Viet Nam to increase its engagement with the Human Rights Council and the High Commissioner for Human Rights. He and the Prime Minister also discussed regional issues, including the situation in the South China Sea.
