Esta es una visita de solidaridad y de homenaje.

Solidaridad con el pueblo colombiano que da hoy al mundo un ejemplo muy importante de afirmación de la paz, un mundo en que desafortunadamente vemos tantos conflictos, es muy importante visitar un país en que se construye la paz.

Por otro lado, quiero también prestar homenaje al gobierno y al pueblo colombiano por su enorme generosidad con casi 2 millones de venezolanos que se quedan en Colombia y que recibieron un estatuto de protección temporal que es un ejemplo que debería ser seguido en tantas partes del mundo donde los refugiados, los migrantes, no encuentran hospitalidad.

Un pueblo generoso, un pueblo amigo. Estuve aquí muchas veces como Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados, fue una de las primeras visitas que hice como Secretario General y esta es la primera visita de campo post covid. Ya estuve en conferencias internacionales pero como ida al campo, contactar la realidad, sobre todo en las áreas que están mas lejas de la capital, esta es la primera que estoy haciendo en el mundo, exactamente para demostrar mi enorme admiración por Colombia y por  el pueblo colombiano.

Secretary-General’s remarks to the media upon arrival in Colombia

This is a visit of solidarity and tribute.

Solidarity with the Colombian people that today gives the world a very important example of affirming peace, a world in which unfortunately we see so many conflicts, it is very important to visit a country where peace is being built.

On the other hand, I also want to pay tribute to the government and the Colombian people for their enormous generosity with almost 2 million Venezuelans who remain in Colombia and who received a temporary protection status. That is an example that should be followed in so many parts of the world, where refugees and migrants do not find hospitality.

A generous people, a friendly people. I was here many times as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, it was one of the first visits I made as Secretary General and this is my first post-covid field visit. I have already been to international conferences, but as a visit to the field, to feel the reality, especially in the areas that are farthest from the capital, this is the first visit that I am doing, exactly to show my enormous admiration for Colombia and for the Colombian people.
