The Secretary-General met today with the President of the Republic of Panama, H.E. Mr. Juan Carlos Varela Rodríguez. The Secretary-General commended Panama’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and its leadership and commitment with peace and security in the region.

President Varela noted Panama´s cooperation on migration. The Secretary-General acknowledged with appreciation that the Humanitarian Hub set to open in Panama will significantly increase the humanitarian response capacity of the region. The Secretary-General and the President further discussed current regional developments, including combatting drug trafficking, emphasizing the importance of community-based approaches.
 

El Secretario General se reunió con el Presidente de la República de Panamá, el Excelentísimo Sr. Juan Carlos Varela Rodríguez. El Secretario General elogió los esfuerzos de Panamá por alcanzar los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible y su liderazgo y compromiso con la paz y la seguridad regionales. 

El Presidente Varela subrayó la cooperación de Panamá en materia migratoria. El Secretario General reconoció con aprecio que el futuro Centro Humanitario en Panamá aumentará significativamente la capacidad de respuesta humanitaria de la región. El Secretario General y el Presidente Varela discutieron los actuales desafíos regionales como la lucha contra el narcotráfico y la importancia de enfocar la respuesta desde las comunidades.
