Note to Correspondents - Meeting of the Secretary-General with his Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Ghassan Salamé

On 28 July, the Secretary-General met with his Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Ghassan Salamé, in New York. The Secretary-General asked Mr. Salamé to consult widely and develop a comprehensive United Nations approach and a plan of action in support of an inclusive political solution to the crisis in the country, in the framework of the Libyan Political Agreement. In the coming days, Mr. Salamé will conduct internal briefings with senior United Nations officials, before travelling to Libya to consult extensively with all Libyan actors.

Mr. Salamé is grateful for the trust that the Secretary-General and the Security Council have placed in him to help the Libyan people build peace, stability and national unity and for the numerous expressions of support he has received from Libyans and the international community. He looks forward to working closely with all Libyans, along with neighbouring countries, regional and international actors and organizations, as he plans to lead efforts to facilitate a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process.
