Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on US/UN relations

The Secretary-General welcomes the commitment to renewed U.S. engagement with the United Nations as recently stressed by U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice on behalf of the Obama Administration. U.S. leadership at the United Nations is essential, given the complex array of challenges facing the international community, from climate change, to issues of peace and security, to human rights. Providing the resources necessary to allow the United Nations to undertake the jobs asked of it is also essential. Therefore the Secretary-General particularly welcomes the recent U.S. contributions to the United Nations provided by the Obama Administration and the US Congress.

The Secretary-General is committed to continuing the reform process and looks forward to working with the United States, and all the Member States of the United Nations, to ensure that the Organization can meet the demands asked of it by Member States in the most effective, efficient and accountable way possible.
