Readout of the Secretary-General's meeting with H.E. Mr. Lee Myung-bak, President of the Republic of Korea

The Secretary-General had a cordial and substantive meeting with President Lee Myung-bak. He expressed his appreciation of the Republic of Korea's role in bringing development into the G20 agenda. They agreed on the need for the G20 leaders to look beyond the current eurozone crisis and address development issues and other related matters. They also discussed sustainable development and the forthcoming Rio+20 conference and Korea's contribution to the development agenda through innovative financing, including the airline solidarity fund.

The Secretary-General and the Korean President exchanged views on the Middle East and South Sudan. The Secretary-General expressed his appreciation regarding Korea's contribution to UN peacekeeping, in particular its upcoming contribution in South Sudan. The Secretary-General also discussed his visit to Libya as well as the recent humanitarian visit by Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Valerie Amos, to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and in particular programmes for the assistance of children.
