A Língua Portuguesa é um tesouro inestimável que transcende fronteiras e oceanos.

Falada por centenas de milhões de pessoas, é o veículo de uma riqueza cultural extraordinária, unindo comunidades e nações, em diferentes partes do mundo.

Uma mesma língua, uma vasta pluralidade de vozes.

E essa diversidade é tão mais rica quanto mais intensa é a colaboração entre os países de língua portuguesa, em áreas como a educação, a cultura, a ciência e a investigação.

Esta língua é uma herança comum e é uma preciosa semente de futuro.

E o seu futuro deve, também, afirmar-se no espaço público virtual, com a expansão dos conteúdos culturais e científicos em português – porque a sociedade do conhecimento só será verdadeiramente global, aberta e inclusiva se for uma sociedade multilingue.

Neste Dia Mundial da Língua Portuguesa, saúdo o trabalho da Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa na promoção desse património linguístico e cultural e no fortalecimento dos laços entre os povos que a integram.

As Nações Unidas permanecem empenhadas na cooperação com a CPLP e acreditam firmemente que o multilinguismo e a diversidade cultural contribuem para a construção de um mundo mais pacífico, inclusivo e unido.

E, neste ano em que a Cimeira do Futuro nos convidará a pensar nos passos a tomar para esse mundo mais pacífico, inclusivo e unido, urge lembrar, como escreveu Agostinho Neto, que “a esperança somos nós”.

The Portuguese language is an invaluable treasure that transcends borders and oceans.

Spoken by hundreds of millions of people, it is the vehicle of extraordinary cultural richness, uniting communities and nations in different parts of the world.

The same language, a vast plurality of voices.

And this diversity is even richer, the more intense the collaboration between Portuguese-speaking countries, in areas such as education, culture, science and research.

This language is a common heritage and is a precious seed of the future.

And its future must also assert itself in the virtual public space, with the expansion of cultural and scientific content in Portuguese – because the knowledge society will only be truly global, open and inclusive if it is a multilingual society.

On this World Portuguese Language Day, I salute the work of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) in promoting this linguistic and cultural heritage and strengthening ties between the peoples that make up this community.

The United Nations remains committed to cooperation with the CPLP and firmly believes that multilingualism and cultural diversity contribute to building a more peaceful, inclusive and united world.

And, in this year, when the Summit of The Future will call on us to think about the steps to take towards a more peaceful, inclusive and united world, it is urgent to remember, as Agostinho Neto wrote, that “we are the hope”.
