The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by the detention and prosecution of a former official of the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), Claudia González, for activities relating to her work for that body. He also notes with concern that several other former CICIG staff are currently under investigation by judicial authorities, in some cases in relation to their work with CICIG. 

Since CICIG’s closure in 2019, the Secretary-General has received multiple reports pointing to the use of criminal proceedings as a reprisal against persons involved in the investigation and prosecution of corruption cases along with CICIG.  

The Secretary-General recalls the important contribution of CICIG and its personnel to the fight against corruption and impunity in Guatemala. He reiterates his call on the Guatemalan authorities, in accordance with the agreement between the United Nations and the Government establishing the Commission, to protect the personnel of CICIG - whether international or national - from abuse, threats, reprisals or acts of intimidation because of their work for CICIG.

El Secretario General está profundamente consternado por la detención y enjuiciamiento de una ex funcionaria de la Comisión Internacional Contra la Impunidad en Guatemala (CICIG), Claudia González, por actividades relacionadas con su trabajo para ese organismo. También constata con preocupación que otros ex funcionarios de la CICIG están actualmente siendo investigados por las autoridades judiciales, en algunos casos por hechos relacionados con su trabajo en la CICIG. 

Desde el cierre de la CICIG en 2019, el Secretario General ha recibido múltiples informes que apuntan al uso de procesos penales como represalia contra personas que colaboraron con la CIGIC en la investigación y persecución de casos de corrupción.   

El Secretario General recuerda la importante contribución de la CICIG y de su personal a la lucha contra la corrupción y la impunidad en Guatemala. Reitera su llamamiento a las autoridades guatemaltecas para que, de conformidad con el acuerdo entre las Naciones Unidas y el Gobierno por el que se establece la Comisión, protejan al personal de la CICIG -ya sea internacional o nacional- de abusos, amenazas, represalias o actos de intimidación a causa de su trabajo para la CICIG.
