The Secretary-General congratulates the Government of Colombia and the National Liberation Army (ELN) for the agreements they announced in Cuba today on a six-month bilateral national cease-fire, and on a mechanism to define the participation of Colombian society in the peace process. These are important steps forward that send hope to the Colombian people, especially the communities who are most affected by conflict. The participation of the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and the First Commander of the ELN, Antonio Garcia, at the signing ceremony in Havana confirms the political will of the parties.
 
The Secretary-General trusts the parties will now work together and in good faith with the determination to comply with their obligations under the ceasefire and he notes positively their intention to broaden its scope in the future.  He takes note of the requested role for the United Nations Verification Mission in its monitoring and verification and stands ready to continue to accompany the dialogue process through his Special Representative.
 
The Secretary-General reiterates his appreciation to the government and people of Cuba for hosting this latest cycle of talks, which demonstrates their consistent commitment to peace in Colombia.

El Secretario General felicita al Gobierno de Colombia y al Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) por los acuerdos anunciados hoy en Cuba sobre un cese al fuego nacional bilateral de seis meses, y sobre un mecanismo para definir la participación de la sociedad colombiana en el proceso de paz. Estos son pasos importantes que dan esperanza al pueblo colombiano, especialmente a las comunidades más afectadas por el conflicto. La participación del Presidente de Colombia, Gustavo Petro, y del Primer Comandante del ELN, Antonio García, en la ceremonia de firma en La Habana confirma la voluntad política de las partes.
 
El Secretario General confía en que las partes trabajarán juntas y de buena fe con la determinación de cumplir con sus obligaciones acordadas bajo el cese al fuego y nota positivamente la intención de éstas de ampliar su alcance en el futuro. Toma nota de la solicitud del gobierno colombiano para que la Misión de Verificación verifique y monitoree el cese al fuego y reitera su compromiso de continuar acompañando el proceso de diálogo a través de su Representante Especial.
 
El Secretario General renueva su agradecimiento al gobierno y pueblo de Cuba por acoger esta última ronda de negociaciones, reflejo inequívoco de su compromiso con la paz en Colombia.
