Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General

on the elections in Haiti

The Secretary-General congratulates the people of Haiti and the Haitian authorities on the successful conduct of yesterday's elections.

The United Nations was honored to support the Haitian people in exercising their right to choose their next Government, whose primary task would be to oversee the reconstruction of the country after the tremendous tragedies that have befallen it in the past year.

The Secretary-General reaffirms the commitment of the United Nations to continue to assist Haiti in building a prosperous future.

sur les élections en Haiti

Le Secrétaire général félicite le peuple d'Haïti et les autorités haïtiennes pour le bon déroulement des élections hier.

L'Organisation des Nations Unies a été honorée de soutenir le peuple haïtien dans l'exercice de son droit à choisir son prochain gouvernement, qui aura comme principale tâche de veiller à la reconstruction du pays après les immenses tragédies qui se sont abattues sur le pays l'année dernière.

Le Secrétaire général réaffirme l'engagement des Nations Unies à assister Haïti à construire un avenir prospère.
