Statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General on Nigeria's donation to the UN Tsunami Relief Fund

The Secretary-General was very pleased to receive this morning from President Olesegun Obasanjo of Nigeria a cheque for US$5 million for the UN Tsunami Relief Fund.

President Obasanjo told the Secretary-General that the money came from voluntary contributions from the Nigerian people.

The Secretary-General feels that this donation from developing country for the benefit of the many victims of last year's tsunami is a laudable example of international solidarity.

He was also pleased to learn that the Nigerian Government had already donated US$1 million towards relief for victims of hurricane Katrina in the United States.
