In this seventieth anniversary year, I am convinced that the world needs the United Nations more than ever before. The Millennium Development Goals we adopted 15 years ago have helped to lift more than a billion people out of extreme poverty, and have saved millions of lives and improved conditions for millions more around the world. Governments have a window of opportunity to chart a sustainable future; they are poised to adopt a new universal development agenda for the next 15 years in September 2015, and to agree on an ambitious climate change agreement in December. The increasingly complex and interconnected threats to international peace and security challenge us to review and update our approach to conflict prevention, peacekeeping and peacebuilding. These are but a few of the challenges that lie ahead, which call for an unprecedented spirit of cooperation among Member States. Let us work together to achieve these common goals.
