Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi

The Secretary-General met today with His Excellency Mr. Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi.

The Secretary-General and the President discussed measures to support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Malawi, as well as the country’s contribution to international peacekeeping efforts.

The Secretary-General encouraged the Government of Malawi to undertake electoral reform to strengthen democratic governance.

They also discussed humanitarian challenges in the country, in particular food insecurity, and noted the importance of international support.

The Secretary-General further acknowledged the country’s commitment to ending HIV/AIDS by 2030.
