The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Dmitry Medvedev, the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, on the margins of the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Secretary-General expressed his deepest condolences to the people and the Government of the Russian Federation on the tragic crash of flight KGL 9268 and victims of the terrorist attack in Bamako, Mali. They underlined the need for common and coordinated efforts to defeat terrorism.
The Secretary-General informed the Prime Minister that he is preparing a comprehensive Plan of Action on Preventing Violent Extremism for presentation to the General Assembly in the beginning of 2016. They also discussed the current situation in Syria, Burundi, South Sudan and Darfur.
The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister exchanged views on the climate change agenda and negotiations, ahead of the climate change conference in Paris. The Secretary-General encouraged Russia to continue to show leadership in the climate change agenda.
