Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with Prime Minister Tony Abbott of Australia

The Secretary-General met Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott in New York today.  The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister exchanged views on the situations in Syria, Ukraine and their respective regions, as well as on Fiji. 

The Secretary-General thanked Australia for its consistent support for the Organization and they discussed a number of issues around UN peacekeeping specifically. 

The Secretary-General commended Australia for its strong leadership of the G20 and both he and the Prime Minister agreed on the need to do more on poverty eradication.  The Secretary-General emphasized the vital importance of September's Climate Summit and sought Australia's full and constructive participation in that crucial gathering.
