Readout of the Secretary-General’s working lunch with H.E. Mr. János Áder, President of Hungary

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. János Áder, the President of Hungary. The Secretary-General thanked Hungary for organizing the Budapest Water Summit and for the country’s commitment to and leadership on the issues of water and sanitation. They discussed Hungary’s role as the co-chair of the General Assembly Open Working Group on Sustainable Developments Goals in helping to shape the international community’s efforts towards a sustainable future. They also underscored the need to arrive at a binding global climate change agreement by 2015. The Secretary-General invited the President to attend a summit of world leaders next September in New York to help generate the political will for such an agreement. The Secretary-General welcomed Hungary’s contribution to and cooperation with the United Nations. They also discussed the situation in Syria, and the Secretary-General briefed the President on the latest developments on Syria's chemical weapons programme.
