The Secretary-General congratulated President Fernández for Argentina’s presidency of the Security Council. The Secretary-General welcomed the open debate on cooperation between the UN and regional and subregional organizations in the maintenance of international peace and security that Argentina had convened for 6 August. The Secretary-General thanked President Fernández for Argentina’s support for Haiti and praised Argentina for setting an example by integrating gender in national defence and security policies as well as in contributions to peacekeeping operations. They discussed the issue of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas). The Secretary-General reiterated that his good offices to resolve this dispute remain available, if both parties engage. President Fernández also raised for discussion the incidents that affected the 2 July flight of President Evo Morales of Bolivia and the reported large-scale surveillance programmes, as well as the situations in Egypt and Syria.
