Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with His Excellency Mr. Lee Myung-bak, President of the Republic of Korea

The Secretary-General met with President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea.  The Secretary-General commended President Lee for his vision of a “Global Korea” and his leadership in making it a reality.  The Republic of Korea should be proud of becoming one of the world’s leaders and its achievements.  The Secretary-General expressed his deep appreciation of the country’s active support for the United Nations and its active role in the areas of green growth, addressing the climate change challenge, abolishing travel restrictions related to HIV/AIDS, sustainable development, energy and education, as well as the shaping of a post-Millennium Development Goals agenda.

The Secretary-General and President Lee discussed ways to further deepen cooperation between the United Nations and the Republic of Korea.  The Secretary-General expressed his hope that the country would expand its contribution to the work of the Organization, including on peace and security as a non-permanent member of its Security Council.
