Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of the Republic of Togo, in the margins of the 67th General Assembly

The Secretary-General met with President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé of the Republic of Togo.
The Secretary-General welcomed President Gnassingbé’s efforts to engage in national dialogue with opposition parties.
The Secretary-General encouraged the President to work towards the creation of a more conducive environment for the conduct of legislative elections.
The Secretary-General and the President also discussed Togo’s efforts towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the areas of education and agriculture. In this connection, the Secretary-General underscored the importance of Africa’s constant efforts towards enhanced regional unity, coordination and cooperation for peace and sustainable development. He urged Togo to continue to play a leading role in this regard.
