Readout of Secretary-General's telephone conversation with H.E. Mr. Ehud Barak, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of Israel

Ban Ki-Moon, Former Secretary-General

The Secretary-General and the Deputy Prime Minister discussed recent Egyptian efforts aimed at Palestinian unity, as well as the Middle East peace process.

With respect to Palestinian unity, the Secretary-General noted with interest the understanding reached between Fatah and Hamas as announced in Cairo. He indicated that the United Nations would study the agreement carefully once the details were available. The Secretary-General took note of Israel's concerns about the implications of the reconciliation understanding.

He underscored the need for progress towards Palestinian unity within the framework of the Palestinian Authority led by President Abbas and the commitments of the Palestine Liberation Organization. He welcomed efforts towards that end, including the important contribution of Egypt. The Secretary-General said he hoped that reconciliation would now take place in a manner that promoted the cause of peace, security and non-violence.

With respect to the Middle East peace process, the Secretary-General expressed his concern at the impasse in the negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. Continued drift was not desirable for both parties. He informed the Deputy Prime Minister that the Quartet continued to discuss balanced and effective ways to help both parties break the deadlock and move towards resolving all final status issues.
