Press encounter upon arrival at Luanda Airport (unofficial transcript)

Kofi Annan, Former Secretary-General

Good afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen.

I am very happy to be back in Luanda again. My wife and I first came to Angola when I became the Secretary-General five years ago. It was an eventful visit at the time and a lot has happened since.

On this visit I look forward to having very constructive and useful discussions with President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, Members of the Government and I hope I will have the chance to visit some of the UN projects and see some citizens of Angola. But I must say from the outset, that we are very pleased with the progress we made in this country. We would want to work with the Government, UNITA and the people of Angola. We will do what we can to help with the humanitarian situation and work together on reconstruction and recovery. We have lots to discuss and lots to do and I am looking forward to my staying here. Muito Obrigado.
