Note to Correspondents from the C24 Committee on Hurricane Irma

Statement by the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples Decolonization
on those affected by Hurricane Irma

The Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples wishes to convey its profound solidarity with the peoples of Caribbean countries and territories affected by Hurricane “Irma”.

The Special Committee particularly expresses its support to the Governments and peoples of Member States of this subsidiary body that have suffered material damages and human losses as a result of this devastating meteorological disaster.

 The Special Committee supports the Non-Self-Governing Territories of Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, the Turks and Caicos Islands and the United States Virgin Islands, as well as the people of Puerto Rico that have been victims of this natural phenomenon.  

The Special Committee takes this opportunity to transmit its most heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of Hurricane “Irma”.

While expressing sympathy and solidarity to the administering Powers that were affected by the Hurricane, the Special Committee hopes that they comply, in these circumstances, with their obligations with the also affected Non-Self-Governing Territories, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations. Furthermore, it calls on the international community to provide the necessary assistance to address this emergency and start the recovery in the affected areas.
