Excellencies, dear colleagues,
I am pleased to greet the third meeting of the Interdepartmental Taskforce on African Affairs.
I commend your focus on energy planning.
Your commitment to provide coherent and integrated support to African countries is showing results.
The African Common Position on Energy Access and Just Transition marked an important turning point.
The global narrative is changing.
More and more stakeholders are recognizing that energy transition in Africa starts with energy access.
Now is the time for accelerated action and to focus on implementation.
That is why the upcoming COP27 in Egypt is so important. It is a moment when the promises of support and increased ambition made in Glasgow need to be delivered by developed countries and concrete investable projects in developing countries showcased.
We need sound and realistic energy plans informed by the current and future energy needs of every African country.
The recently presented Energy Transition Plan of Nigeria is an example of a data-driven energy plan that will catalyse a just and equitable energy transition.
Effective energy planning also requires institutions responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring these plans.
United Nations entities have a critical role to play here.
We must mobilize the institutional knowledge and technical support needed to establish effective institutions in the energy sector.
Let us work together in this vital endeavour and secure an African energy transition that is swift, just, inclusive, and equitable.
I wish you fruitful discussions.
Thank you.
