DESA News: Promoting the well-being of indigenous peoples

There are approximately 370 million indigenous peoples in the world today. They represent a rich diversity of cultures and histories. They speak a majority of the world''s 7000 languages and they are the custodians of many of the world''s most biologically diverse habitats. Among indigenous peoples there is an enormous wealth of traditional knowledge that covers the whole spectrum of human endeavours, including health systems and medicines.

Yet many of these communities face health challenges including higher maternal mortality rates, poorer access to health services and increased vulnerability to contract HIV and AIDS.

In its efforts to promote the rights and well-being of indigenous peoples worldwide, the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is working to change this. Seven experts from all corners of the world gathered for the first international expert group meeting on the topic of sexual and reproductive health and rights of indigenous peoples.

The experts agree that with the forthcoming World Conference on Indigenous Peoples, the Conference on Population and Development as well as with the ongoing elaboration of the post 2015 development agenda, there is an opportunity for the international community to ensure that these issues are included in the global development agenda, promoting the health and prosperity of indigenous peoples across the globe.

Featured in this video are two of the experts, who attended the meeting:

- Dr. Clive Aspin, Independent Public Health Consultant with special expertise on the impact of HIV on indigenous populations

- Dr. Mirna Cunningham Kain, former Member and Chair of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues
