UN General Assembly President, Mr. Dennis Francis, to undertake official visit to Havana, Republic of Cuba

New York, 26 June 2024 – The President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA), His Excellency, Mr. Dennis Francis, will travel to Havana, Republic of Cuba from 27 to 29 June.

Overall, the PGA’s visit aims to emphasize the importance of promoting peace, progress, prosperity, and sustainability for all; focusing on the need to strengthen multilateralism to address global challenges and achieve a more equitable future, leaving no one or country behind.

While in Havana, the PGA will pay a courtesy call on H.E. Miguel Díaz-Canel, President of the Republic of Cuba. Their exchanges are expected to focus on, among others, Cuba’s progress and contribution to multilateralism and international cooperation, ongoing regional and global challenges, as well as the country’s continued active engagement at the United Nations.

The PGA will also hold separate bilateral meetings with H.E. Bruno Eduardo Rodríguez Parrilla, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba, and the Minister of Public Health of the Republic of Cuba, H.E. José Ángel Portal Miranda, to learn firsthand on the country’s foreign policy and health initiatives and strategic priorities.

Furthermore, the PGA will meet with the Resident Coordinator, Mr. Francisco Pichon, together with other members of UN Country Team to also learn about their contribution to the Republic of Cuba’s sustainable development and regional cooperation efforts.

Moreover, the PGA will engage with the Federation of Cuban Women to gain insights on their achievements, opportunities and any challenges they face. Consistent with the PGA’s practice during official travel, his messaging will highlight the young people, and how they can be involved to contribute to the country’s development aspirations.

Among other notable engagements, the PGA is slated to deliver a Keynote Lecture at Aula Magna of the University of Havana, on the theme “Cuba and Multilateralism: Opportunities and Challenges.” This event is expected to gather an audience comprising of government officials, members of the diplomatic community, youth representatives, women leaders, and academia.

The PGA’s delegation includes his Chef de Cabinet, a Special Adviser to the PGA, a Political, Peace and Security Team Leader, and a Communications Adviser.

Travel costs for the visit are jointly covered by the OPGA’s Trust Fund and the Government of the Republic of Cuba.
