UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis to participate in the Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly (UNCPGA) Meeting in Doha, Qatar
New York, 29 April 2024 –The President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA) for its seventy-eighth session, H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis, will travel to Doha, Qatar from May 1 to 3, 2024, to participate in the Annual Meeting of the Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly (UNCPGA).
During his visit, the PGA will deliver a Keynote Address at the opening session of the UNCPGA, focusing on, among others, the importance of a UN-led multilateral system and the role of the General Assembly in addressing global crises.
He will emphasize the importance of reinvigorated international cooperation, especially at this juncture of the myriad of interconnected challenges and heightened geopolitical tensions, which demand the rebuilding of trust and solidarity among Member States and closer collaboration across all actors in the international community at large.
The PGA will kickstart the visit by delivering Opening Remarks at the first substantive session of the UNCPGA meeting on the Summit of the Future. He will use this to highlight the significance of this Summit in supercharging implementation of the SDGs and renewing commitment to multilateralism.
The PGA will also spotlight the critical issue of Sea-Level Rise in the context of climate change, which is among the Priorities of his Presidency, ahead of the UN General Assembly’s mandated high-level meeting on the matter in September 2024.
The PGA intends to use the occasion of his visit to Doha to also engage in bilateral meetings with Dr. Han Seung-soo, Chair of the UNCPGA, and with Qatar’s high-level leadership such as His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, and His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, as well as Her Excellency, Lolwah Rashid Al-Khater, Minister of State for International Cooperation, to reflect on the state of global affairs.
The visit also provides an opportunity for the PGA to explore further collaboration and initiatives aimed at advancing the goals of the United Nations and the General Assembly. Discussions will also touch upon Qatar’s leadership and commitment to the work of the United Nations.
The PGA’s delegation will include his Chef de Cabinet, a Deputy Team Leader for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, a Communications and Media Adviser and a Senior Security Officer.
Travel costs are covered by the Government of the State of Qatar and the OPGA’s Trust Fund.
