UN General Assembly President, Mr. Dennis Francis, to attend Water Conference in Dushanbe, Tajikistan
New York, 7 June 2024 – The President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA), His Excellency, Mr. Dennis Francis, will travel from 9 to 11 June to Dushanbe, Tajikistan, to attend the Third High-Level International Conference on International Decade for Action, 2018-2028. The Conference will take place from the 10 to 13 June under the theme of “Water for Sustainable Development”.
This High-Level International Conference is hosted by the Government of Tajikistan in collaboration with the United Nations. It is a biennial event designed to support the goals of the International Decade for Action, offering a platform to follow up on, promote, and support the implementation of voluntary commitments recorded in the Water Action Agenda from the UN 2023 Water Conference. It also aims to foster new partnerships and expedite actions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
The PGA will deliver remarks at the Opening Ceremony of the Conference to an audience of Heads of State and Government, Ministers, and other high-level dignitaries and participants. The Conference will also feature interactive dialogues and side events, including a side-event on water and youth, hosted by UNICEF, in which the PGA is expected to participate.
While in Dushanbe, the PGA will pay a courtesy call on the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Mr. Emomali Rahmon, and hold separate bilateral meetings with the Chairman of the Majlisi Milli of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Mr. Rustami Emomali and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin.
The PGA will use his attendance at the Dushanbe Conference to highlight the importance of building resilience and promoting collaboration. He will urge to build on the success of the 2023 UN Water Conference and fortify the shared commitment to water sustainability and the broader agenda on sustainable development.
The PGA’s delegation includes his Chef de Cabinet, an Adviser, as well as a Communications Adviser.
Travel costs for the visit are jointly covered by the OPGA’s Trust Fund and the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan.
