Pre-recorded Video Statement
Your Excellency, Mohamed Sadiki, Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests of the Kingdom of Morocco,
Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,
My best wishes to you all on International Day of Argania – proclaimed by the General Assembly in 2021, at the initiative by the Kingdom of Morocco – recognizing the important role of the Argan tree in achieving sustainable development.
Indeed, the ancient Argan tree – endemic to the Kingdom of Morocco – is a unique backbone to the ecosystem.
Its world-renowned oil and derivatives are not only an important source of income and sustenance for local communities.
The products are promoted by rural cooperatives of women – who have passed on the tradition, over generations for centuries.
These cooperatives are a central strand in the socioeconomic tapestry of Argania – empowering women entrepreneurs, preserving distinctive sustainable practices; and working in concert with civil society, scientists and local producers to thrive, innovate and deliver value.
In these ways, the Argan tree is a mainstay of local communities, who have developed a culture and identity around its heritage – a proud testament to the diversity and ingenuity of humanity.
On this Day, we celebrate the novelty of this ancient tree for a brighter future – to also advance the SDGs.
We highlight the Argan tree’s many contributions to food security, climate resilience and protection against water distress – thanks to its nurturing and promotion by local communities, cooperatives and agricultural organizations.
We share best practices for the sustainable management of the argan grove, shining the spotlight on its vital importance and central role to rural economies and in the development of Arganiculture.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all who have contributed to the marking of this important Day.
Together, let us continue to embrace diversity, preserve culture, advance economic opportunity, and build a world in which mutual respect and cooperation indeed thrive, for all.
I thank you.
