
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis, had a coordination meeting with H.E. Mr. H.E. Mr. José Javier De la Gasca LopezDomínguez, Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations and the President of the Security Council for the month of December 2023.
Ambassador De la Gasca briefed the President on the programme of work of the Security Council during Ecuador’s Presidency, highlighting Ecuador’s two high-level signature events: an open debate on transnational organized crime on 7 December, and a briefing on small arms and light weapons on 15 December.
Both sides expressed concern about the continuing crisis in the Middle East and emphasized the need for a strong and effective Security Council.
The two Presidents further discussed the situation in Haiti and President Francis thanked Ambassador De la Gasca for joining him in the informal General Assembly briefing on Haiti he is convening on 18 December to brief the Member States on his recent visit to the country, and to mark the occasion of three GRULAC members holding the Presidencies of three main bodies of the United Nations in December.
The meeting took place at the President’s Office at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, on 5 December 2023.
