Readout of the Meeting Between the President of UN General Assembly and the President of the UN Security Council for November 2023

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis, had a coordination meeting with H.E. Mr. Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations and the President of the Security Council for the month of November 2023.

Ambassador Zhang briefed the President on the programme of work of the Security Council during China’s Presidency, noting that the crisis in the Middle East is the most imminent issue for the Council, requiring a Council’s response. Ambassador Zhang also highlighted China’s signature event that focuses on promoting sustaining peace through common development.

PGA expressed confidence in China’s leadership and ability to bring Member States together to have progress in the Security Council, including on the crisis in the Middle East.

PGA noted that peace and security is one of the core issues for the UN and there is a need to make a bigger investment in promoting peace.

The meeting took place at the President’s Office at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, on 31 October 2023.
