Today we commemorate the World food Day to honour the importance of food production in sustaining healthy life on our planet.
I welcome this year’s call to action: Water is life, water is food. Leave no one behind.
As we mark this important day, let us be reminded that 2.4 billion people live in water-stressed countries.
The effects of pollution, ecosystem degradation, unsustainable practices and climate change are all placing the planet’s precious water resources under increasing stress.
Food security is the cornerstone of sustainable development and goes hand-in-hand with water security.
Water forms the basis of our bodies, is essential to producing our food and supports nearly all aspects of our livelihoods.
Lack of access to clean, fresh water has worsened global food insecurity.
With 800 million people in a state of chronic hunger today, the most sustainable way to improve food security is through improving access to clean water.
Together, let us pledge to save this precious resource and work much harder towards transforming food systems, investing in sustainable agricultural practices and drought-resistant nutritious crops, and mitigating the impacts of conflict on global food and water security.
Together, let us take water action in support of food systems.
Let us achieve zero hunger and food security.
I thank you.
