Meeting with Foreign Minister of Argentina and candidate to the position of the next Secretary-General of the United Nations

The President of the General Assembly, Peter Thomson, met bilaterally with Susana Malcorra, Foreign Minister of Argentina and candidate to the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations, in the afternoon of Sunday, 18 September, 2016. The officials discussed preparations for the upcoming high-level week of the General Assembly and some of the latest developments on the UN agenda. They exchanged views on the recent peace agreement signed between the Government of Colombia and the FARC, and expressed hope that the current cease fire in Syria will hold so that progress can begin to be made towards peace. On the selection process for the new Secreatry-General, the President of the General Assembly emphasized his commitment to continue in the same spirit of openness, transparency and inclusiveness as his predecessor and to contibute to a smooth and timely appointment of the next Secretary-General upon the General Assembly receiving the recommendation of the Security Council.
