Restoring farmer agency through climate intelligence

Meet Theophilus Delali Dumenyo, Founder and CEO of E-Organics, formerly Ento Organics, a youth-led climate agritech company based in Ghana. An agricultural economist and food systems researcher currently pursuing a Master’s in Local Food Policy at CIHEAM in Italy, Theophilus’ work sits at the intersection of climate resilience, food systems, agricultural economics and digital innovation.

Climate change has added a new layer of uncertainty and injustice, especially for farming communities. Farmers have been planting crops based on seasonal patterns they had trusted for years, but are now facing erratic rainfall, longer dry spells, and declining soil fertility.These impacts further stress existing inequalities by affecting those with the least access to timely information, technology, or financial support to adapt to rapid changes.

“Climate change was not only an environmental problem. It was also a justice issue, a livelihoods issue, and a food systems issue,” says Theophilus. “That made the challenge personal. I could not ignore the fact that communities feeding the nation were being left exposed to risks they did not create.”

Climate information that is practical and accessible to all
E-Organics began its community-based work in southern Ghana, including Bewoanum, Fianko and Obrakyere, , and has since expanded across northern communities including Gbulung, Gingani Village, Nakpatua, Dalun, Voggu, Zangbalung, Gupanerigu and Bontanga. The organization combines automated weather stations, farmer profiling, hyper-local advisories, community training, SMS, voice support and local-language engagement.

In Ghana, Theophilus shares how agriculture remains highly vulnerable to climate shocks, yet many adaptation tools do not reach smallholder farmers in ways that are timely, practical, or inclusive. E-Organics shows that combining localized climate intelligence, digital support, and farmer centered training can help close that gap.

“As of 2026, E-Organics has profiled 3,803 farmers, including 2,278 women, operates three automated weather stations and records a 98.2 percent successful advisory delivery rate. With support from UNDP’s Youth4Climate initiative, the organization expanded its community-based climate resilience work in northern Ghana in 2026, strengthening farmer training and digital advisory services,” says Theophilus. If scaled well, he adds, this approach could strengthen national efforts around food security, climate adaptation, gender inclusion, and resilient rural livelihoods.

“This initiative matters deeply to me because it reflects the kind of climate action I believe Africa needs: practical, community rooted, and designed for people who are often excluded from innovation systems. It also challenges the existing narrative that African communities are only victims of climate change. This initiative shows that local innovation can generate solutions that are adaptive, scalable and globally meaningful,” he adds.

The projects through E-Organics are also an opportunity to support women farmers who play central roles in food production but are often excluded from access to climate information or modern technologies. Closing this gap empowers women farmers and highlights that climate resilience is not just a privilege reserved for a few. “We are building tools that respond to real problems farmers face and doing so in a way that is rooted in local realities, local languages, and community trust” says Theophilus.

From theory to practice
Theophilus recalls an example for us from Gbulung in northern Ghana, where farmers facing increasingly uncertain rainfall had very limited access to timely weather and agricultural extension information. Through E-Organics, the farmers were connected to local weather monitoring systems to translate the data into practical guidance on planting and crop management. “The immediate outcome was simple but important: farmers who previously made key seasonal decisions with little localized information could now receive timely guidance before planting and during the season,” he notes.

For Theophilus, the longer-term ambition is to build climate intelligence and food systems infrastructure that supports farmers, agricultural organizations, and researchers and policymakers, by linking field-level data with agricultural economics and food policy.

“I hope our work contributes to changing the perception of where innovation comes from. African youth are not waiting to be rescued. We are building solutions that can inform the future of climate action, agriculture, and inclusive development worldwide,” he adds.

Climate action rooted in pride and urgency
Theophilus reminds us that land, water, forests, and food systems are the foundation of life, health, livelihoods, and dignity across the continent. When these systems are damaged, the effects show up everywhere: in rising food prices, lost incomes, migration pressures, fragile health outcomes, and deepening inequality. Environmental protection is therefore not only about conservation but also about survival, justice, and opportunity.

“Climate action in Africa should be rooted in pride as much as urgency,” he says. “This continent holds immense ecological wealth and human ingenuity. Protecting it means protecting our identity, our communities, and our right to thrive on our own terms.”

Protecting the environment is not separate from protecting the future and African youth have a unique role to play, he points out. “Africa is one of the youngest continents in the world, it has creativity, energy, and lived understanding to shape solutions that are relevant to current realities. Caring for the environment is not only about reacting to crisis. It is about defining the kind of future we want to inherit and build.”
