Strengthening the capacity of African countries to design and implement policies that promote the interlinkages among humanitarian, development, peace and security for an accelerated implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Agenda 2063

The United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA) within its mandate on global advocacy for Africa’s development, peace and security, is organizing two virtual sub-regional workshops aimed at contributing to building the capacity of African member States’ policy makers to design and implement policies that promote the interlinkages or nexus between peace, security, human rights, humanitarian affairs and development.

The first virtual workshop for Southern and Eastern sub-regions, is scheduled to take place on 8-9 June 2021, while the second virtual workshop for Central, Northern and Western sub-regions is planned for 10-11 June 2021.

The virtual workshops, which are being organized in partnership with United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and UN-Office of High Representative on Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS), will be attended by a wide range of participants from government ministries and officials at diplomats of African countries to representatives of African Think Tanks and the academy as well as AU and UN system entities.

The virtual workshops are part of the activities being implemented in the project entitled: “Strengthening the capacity of African countries to design and implement policies that promote the interlinkages among humanitarian, development, peace and security for an accelerated implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Agenda 2063”. The project is funded by the United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund.

Objectives

Specifically, the virtual workshops are intended to raise awareness and build knowledge and capacity of countries in the sub-regions to understand the importance of the nexus in their countries. The workshops will promote best practices sharing through cases analysis as well as understanding the challenges. They will identify policy recommendations that could be used by member states to integrate the aspects of the nexus in their national development plans to sustain peace and promote sustainable development. The workshops will also validate the baseline assessment study, which assesses the degree of awareness and capacity of African countries to formulate and implement policies that reinforce the interlinkages on development, peace, security, humanitarian and human rights

Expected Outcome

Increased awareness, knowledge and capacity of African policymakers on the needed policies and strategies that promote the nexus between peace, security and development.
