The SAMOA Pathway expanded the mandate of UN-OHRLLS to include small island developing states (SIDS). Sea-level rise and other adverse impacts of climate change continue to pose a significant risk to SIDS and their efforts to achieve sustainable development. For many, climate change also represents the gravest threat to their survival and viability.

PRAIA, 25 July 2019 – Government representatives from small islands and the United Nations are meeting in Cabo Verde over the next two days to strengthen coordination of efforts to localize the SAMOA Pathway* and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in small island developing States (SIDS).

INTRODUCTION

The United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) and the Government of Cabo Verde are convening the second Small Island Developing States National Focal Points meeting from 25 to 26 July 2019 in Praia, Cabo Verde.

The Tenth General Meeting between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and its associated institutions and the United Nations (UN) system was convened at the Headquarters of the CARICOM Secretariat in Georgetown, Guyana, on 23 and 24 July 2019.  High Representative Fekitamoeloa Katoa 'Utoikamanu spoke via video message.

The policy briefs focus on links between SDG 7 and the SDGs that will be under review at the 2019 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) taking place in New York,  namely SDG 4 (quality education), SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), SDG 10 (reduced inequalities), SDG 13 (climate action), SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions), and SDG 17 (partnerships f
