In the weeks leading up to the eightieth session of the General Assembly, the UNHQ-NY clinic, which is part of the Division of Healthcare Management and Occupational Safety and Health, transformed its daily routine into a highly coordinated operation.
With thousands of delegates, staff, and visitors expected to converge on UN Headquarters, the clinic had to be ready for every eventuality.
Preparation began with a comprehensive risk assessment. The team analyzed data from previous UNGA sessions, identified trends in medical issues, and updated contingency plans for everything from minor injuries to major emergencies.
Staffing rosters were reinforced to ensure extended coverage throughout the high-level week.
Medical supplies were thoroughly reviewed and replenished, with special attention to personal protective equipment and isolation materials to maintain readiness for potential infectious disease cases.
Training was equally prioritized. As UNGA 80 approached, staff revisited the mass-casualty plan, refreshed basic and advanced life support skills, and reviewed protocols for managing high-concern infectious diseases, including Ebola. Simulation drills and scenario-based exercises clarified roles, strengthened teamwork, and built confidence for responding under pressure.
Coordination with internal and external partners was another critical component. The clinic worked closely with UN security and protocol teams, with conference management services, and with New York City emergency services to map major event venues and high-risk zones.
Referral pathways to local hospitals and ambulance services were confirmed, supported by updated contact lists and clear procedures for rapid transfers in serious cases.
Finally, the clinic focused on supporting the well-being of its own staff, who were expected to work long and demanding hours.
Through rigorous planning, targeted training, and strong collaboration, the clinic entered UNGA 80 fully prepared to deliver safe, high-quality care and ensure the smooth running of this major global event.
The high-level week concluded successfully, with the clinic’s readiness contributing to a secure and well-supported environment for all participants.
The Division of Healthcare Management and Occupational Safety and Health is in the Department of Operational Support (DOS).
