In the Aftermath of War: Building Expertise to Protect Civilians

Liberia has overcome the odds. Despite a fragile peace in the wake of its 14-year civil war, and the ravages of a recent Ebola outbreak, the country has remained stable and free of violent conflict. Yet remnants of war still threaten its population. Thousands of unexploded bombs still linger throughout the country. These highly volatile explosives can maim or kill anyone who handles them without care. UNMAS trains the national police services and armed forces of Liberia to safely remove the threat of unexploded ordnance. After extensive training, these professional police and military forces can now identify, move and securely dispose of all explosive remnants of war.

In the Aftermath of War: Keeping Civilians Safe from Guns and Bombs

Unstable ammunition and weapons storage areas pose a threat to civilians in many countries around the world. UNMAS uses its expertise to mitigate this threat in the Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Libya, Mali and South Sudan. By managing weapons and ammunitions, either destroying or safely storing it, the United Nations builds security and protects civilians.

Gaza: Rapid Response

Called on by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, UNMAS immediately deployed to Gaza in July 2014, cleared hundreds of sites, saved many lives and ensured the operations of the UNRWA.

Most of us will never understand the terror and human cost that comes from living with land mines. To raise awareness for the fight against land mines, United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) and Critical Mass created an iBeacon-powered virtual minefield to make it possible for New Yorkers to experience the fear millions live with every day.
