This page will provide a listing of documents containing relevant materials on training  for sustainable development for the Caribbean region that are available free of charge throughout the internet.

Metadata - Development and Use 

On the NOAA Coastal Services Centre website, there are a number of resources relating to the development and use of coastal geospatial metadata, including training materials. This coastal metadata reference site is designed to provide information on metadata creation, validation, publication and standards.

The website of the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) also contains useful online resources relating to metadata, specifically general metadata standards and proposed standards for ecological and environmental data. Analytical Tools are also available foronline for use and downloading. 

Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Summer Institute on Vulnerability Associated with Climate Variability and Climate Change in Central America and the Caribbean. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, October 26 – November 8, 2003. This activity will be co-sponsored together with the Inter-American Agency for Cooperation and Development (IACD), the Organization of American States (OAS), the United National Development Programme (UNDP) and will have the collaboration of other partner organizations.

Ecological Modelling

Within the website of the European Chapter for the International Society for Ecological Modelling there is a link to a server on ecological modelling. The website includes models, modelling and simulation and data sources.

The United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU/IAS) undertakes science and technology research within two broad areas: Biotechnology and Biodiversity.

Capacity Development

Training Workshop on Methodologies, Tools and Best Practices for Managing Information for Decision-making on Sustainable Development in Caribbean SIDS October 27-31st, 2003 - Trinidad and Tobago.
The General Secretariat of Organization of American States, through the Unit for Sustainable Development and Environment as Field Managing Institution for the "Capacity-Building in Creating Information Management Systems to Improve Decision-making for Sustainable Development for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Project", hosted a Training Workshop on Methodologies, Tools and Best Practices for Managing Information for Decision-making on Sustainable Development in Caribbean SIDS, which took place from October 27-31st, 2003 at the UWI St. Augustine campus in Trinidad and Tobago.

Biosecurity: Capacity Building on Access to Genetic Resources, Benefit Sharing and Biosafety in Central Asian Countries and Mongolia

Sustainable Measures provides an online Trainer's Workshop on Sustainable Community Indicators. The material was developed with sipport of the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Sustainable Ecosystems and Communities (OSEC).

The Center for International Science Information Network (CIESIN)  offers training in Geographic Information Systems, remote sensing and metadata tools and management. they offer ESRI authorized training in ArcView® 3.x and ArcGIS® 8.x software. In addition, they can provide training programs focusing on information technology, on-line mapping, and other themes to address the needs of non-profit groups, governmental organizations and private industry. Columbia University offers a program on Computer Technology and Applications. Students in this track prepare for careers as database architects, programmers, and administrators; application developers; and systems analysts.

System For Analysis, Research, and Training (START) invites applications for START fellows and visiting scientists to participate in the 12th round of the START Fellowship/Visiting Scientist Program. This program is designed to increase the number of developing country scientists who serve as active partners in global change research in START regional networks and in the Joint and Core Projects of the Earth System Science Partnership (DIVERSITAS, IHDP, IGBP, and WCRP). Through this effort, these scientists will also be able to contribute to related aspects of sustainable development for their respective countries and regions.
