IDSD Pilot Network (in Development)
In the Caribbean, the need for formulating national integrated development plans and policies for implementing sustainable development stands out. In order to determine the information needs of the region, it is important to establish communications fora where an exchange of information on ongoing and planned projects and a dialogue on sustainable development can take place. One of the IDSD project's main activities will be the facilitation of information sharing through the establishment of a pilot network of individuals and organizations involved in the sustainable development process throughout the region. This network is expected to facilitate discussion on managing and analyzing information for sustainable development, and to support the work of the project through timely review and comments. The network will also, of necessity, be a medium for the sharing of information. As such, it is hoped that the pilot network will facilitate the practice of sharing information amongst all actors in the region over ongoing activities.
The IDSD pilot network will incorporate into its design the experience of previously established networks in the region, such as SIDSNET (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs), the Sustainable Development Networking Programme (United Nations Environmental Programme), CEPNET (United Nations Environment Programme/Caribbean Regional Coordinating Unit - Jamaica) and Landnet Americas (OAS/USAID). Key factors guiding the design of the network are: (i) effectiveness in reaching its target audience, (ii) effectiveness in meeting the needs of practitioners, and (iii) to be sustainable.
The IDSD pilot network is currently in development by a consultant to the OAS/UNDESA, and will be hosted at this website. It is anticipated to be fully functional in July 2003.
Establishment Of An E-Group On Information For Decision-Making For Sustainable Development As a result of the recommendation emanating from the meeting in Saint Lucia, urging that any new networks should be based on an existing mechanism, the OAS in collaboration with the CCA have established an e-group based on the CCA list-serv on Information for Decision-making for Sustainable Development. The list-serv serves as a forum for discussion and information-sharing on this topic and an avenue for seeking common solutions to common problems. Interested parties can sign up through CCAOASIDSD@yahoogroups.com to become a member. The link is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CCAOASIDSD/. Further details on the pilot network can be found in the report "Proposal for a Pilot Network for Decision-Making for Sustainable Development."
Small Islands Voice is an inter-regional initiative focusing on small islands - both small island developing states, and islands with other affiliations - in the Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Pacific regions. The long-term goal of this initiative is that the voice of the general public in small islands is heard and that it becomes a driving force for island development.
